I get asked all the time for general tips on how to get more out of your eBay auctions. Ultimately, many of my specific tips come from reviewing your items directly, so if you’d ever like a little advice on what you can do to push your selling prices higher, contact me here.
In the meantime, let me give you my top 10 tips for selling on eBay!
1. What’s Your Item Really Worth?
It’s hard to sell something that you don’t know, and many of us on eBay that are trying to get rid of random items from around the home aren’t sure how to do the research. Make sure you check the completed listings. There’s an “Advanced Search” feature next to the search bar that looks like this:
Click on the “Advanced” link to do a keyword search (looking for your item) and then selecting the “Completed Listings” option. This will offer you the most recent listings for items similar for yours, the asking price, whether it sold or not, etc… Remember– something is only worth what somebody else is willing to pay. Yes– you might think that what you’re listing is worth $1,000, but if there aren’t buyers at that price, is it really worth $1,000? Probably not. 2. Decide on your Pricing and Listing Formats
So what’s it going to be– an action auction or a “Buy it Now” price on your item? How do you decide? This depends on many different variables. How quickly do you need to get rid of the item? Do you have time to pick a price and wait for it to sell at the price you want? Maybe you just need to get rid of it ASAP! What about fees? You’re charged some if you do a fixed-price, whereas the fees are free for auction-style listings (at least, for your first 50). Do you have any COGS (cost of goods sold)? In other words, are you buying it at a price and need to get rid of it at another just to break even? These are all things to consider when choosing how to list your item. Most of the stuff I do is at a fixed price because I cannot afford to sell many of my items lower than a certain price. For the casual eBayer, you may find that if you’re just looking to get a few bucks out of an item, throw it on eBay at .99 cents (assuming you list it well) and watch as the market will give you it’s value.
3. Sign up for Paypal and Use it
You are going to need a way to exchange money on eBay. Paypal is the standard. You are going to need an account. It’s free– just go here to sign-up. Paypal is simply like having another bank account that easily connects with eBay, allowing buyers and sellers an easy way to exchange funds.
4. Write a Solid Listing Title
This is one point I cannot emphasize enough! You’re title is, in my opinion, the most important part of your listing and often gets over-looked! Currently, you’re allowed a total of 80 characters in the title. Use all of them! Make sure they are descriptive and using keywords that people are going to potentially use to search for your item. How do you know what keywords to use? Go out and do a search for other items and find how Top-Rated Sellers are doing it! You’ll get much more exposure if you do this well.
5. Write a Solid Listing Description
A good description is well-written, concise, easy to follow, organized, and contains everything that a buyer would need to know! This is especially important if you are selling a used item, as buyers are very concerned about the actual condition of what they are paying for. A picture can only do so much… if there are any flaws, you need to make sure you are citing them! Trying to hide potential problems with your item will only result in unhappy buyers and negative feedback.
6. Include Good Photos
A picture speaks a thousand words! Even a good title and good description cannot overcompensate for a poor picture. Pe0ple are visual, especially when they are purchasing an item off the internet. They don’t have the luxury of picking it up in their hands, examining it, etc… This is even more critical when you are selling higher end items, like furniture, designer clothing, vehicles, and more. You really think somebody is going to buy that $3,000 furniture set with one small picture that shows absolutely no detail? Thank again!
7. Make your Shipping Costs Reasonable
Attempting to hide some of your price in shipping is silly. Just charge what’s fair. And if you want to play the free shipping game, that’s fine too– build the cost of shipping into the price. Whatever you do– test various approaches to see what works!
8. Communicate with your Buyer
You will get questions about your items from would-be-buyers. If you respond quickly and professionally, the likelihood of a sale will increase substantially. Also– be sure to leave feedback on how the transaction went, as the rest of the community needs to see who is worth doing business with and who is not!
9. Become Familiar with My eBay
90% of what you do on eBay starts and ends with the “My eBay” section of the website. This is where you edit listings, pay for items, track statistics, communicate with buyers, etc… If you’re not used to it, go in and learn! Simply by spending time there, you will come to understand how to do most anything you need done.
10. Ship your Products from Home
Not all of us have time to run to the post office every time we close a sale. You can use UPS or USPS to pick-up items from your home to ship for you. Yes– it’s extremely convenient. Many of us are doing eBay on the side, and do not have time to be running back and forth from the post office all day long.
